Worship @ Home on Wednesday

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria talked, in the 4th century, of the book of psalms as having a very special grace, representing and portraying the great variety and movements of the human soul. I hope that in the psalms you can find words which help to express some of the variety and movements of your souls in these days. Today we gather round Psalm 40.Here is an outline of our Worship @ Home on Wednesday which you can use on your own or with other people who are in your household.

Opening Words

The Psalmist sings

‘I waited patiently for the Lord’s help

And God pulled me from deep mud

God stood me on solid rock

And God taught me to sing a song of thanksgiving

Bible Reading – Psalm 40

Faithful, Holy God

Waiting, praying – we worship you and  thank you that you are always waiting for us , hearing our prayers.

Faithful God

In our waiting may there be enough…

enough patience to rely on your steadfastness

enough expectation to know your hope

enough restlessness to be called into your service

enough openness to be surprised by you.

Holy God

In our praying may there be enough….

enough silence to hear you

enough speaking to praise you

enough listening to recognise you

enough humility to honour you.

And even when we struggle, question, stray, lack

May we trust in your love

which is always enough…..

enough to carry us

enough to transform us

enough to redeem us

enough to hold us

now and forever. Amen

If you have a copy of CH4, read through or sing Hymn 31 , a version of this psalm

May the blessing of the God of peace encircle you and all whom you love today and always.
