Messy Mondays 27.7.20

Hello  Messy  Monday Friends

Jesus was great at telling stories. Often we call these stories parables. Today we think about two stories where Jesus used ordinary things to help people understand more about God’s love.

How do you describe something to someone if they do not know what you are talking about? Imagine trying to describe a dandelion. You could say. It is a plant. It has yellow flowers. It is like a daffodil. Some people call it a weed. Have a go at describing something you know about. Perhaps a film, a book, a bird or a machine. Can your family guess what you are describing?

Jesus often tried to tell his friends what life would be like if people loved God and loved their neighbours. He said that it would be like a tiny seed that would grow into a huge bush. Then he said it would be like the yeast that makes dough rise. ( Matthew 13 )

Here are ideas for a couple of activities to do with seeds and bread.

Cress Heads You will need: paper cups, felt-tip pens, stickers, compost, cress seeds, and plastic spoons. Draw a face on one side of the paper cup, using felt-tip pens and  decorate the other side of the paper cup with stickers. Scoop some compost into the paper cup using spoons and  fill to about 2 cm from the rim. Dampen the compost a little and scatter cress seeds over the soil, pressing in gently. Add a little drop of water each day wait until cress ‘hair’ grows.

Make your own sandwich You will need: different kinds of flat breads and crackers, different kinds of rolls, sandwich fillings (such as jam, cheese spread, or chocolate spread)Remember  to wash your hands first and then make some sandwiches . What’s the difference between the look and taste and texture of a cracker, flat bread, and roll? It’s yeast that makes the difference

A tiny seed and a tiny  amount of yeast can make a difference. Jesus told these stories to help us understand more about  the way love makes a difference, bringing in God’s kingdom. Every small act of love and kindness can make a difference. Think about a small thing you can do today that helps share love.

Take care and stay safe

From Karen and all the Messy Church Team

And at the end of today remember to say the blessing we use at Messy Church

From the top of our heads, to our shoulders, to our knees, to our toes

May the love of God be with us wherever we are. Amen
