Thank you to Douglas Scott  for today’s Friday Focus.

SPRING RAINBOWS

Recently when I was out strolling during the spate of fine spring weather, I noticed on a stretch of the pavement on Dunlop Street a group of chalk drawings depicting rainbows of various shapes and sizes. These were obviously a variation of the rainbows displayed in many of the adjacent house windows, alongside their messages of thanks to care and health workers.

Later when I was back at home I suddenly remembered that once, many moons ago, I, aged about 7 or 8, used to make chalk drawings on the pavements of Kenilworth Crescent. Only I didn’t do rainbows: my drawings were of little street networks (a bit like the mats in the hub area of our church building). When my road grid was completed I then used it to play around with my Matchbox cars.

But then I was struck by the thought that if I could remember doing that such a long time ago, perhaps those who had been drawing the rainbows would, many years on from now, would too look back and remember drawing the rainbows, and more importantly why they had done so.

Maybe they’ll recall the time when their daily routine was suddenly interrupted by that bizarre virus that suddenly swept across our planet and endangered our lives. And maybe they’ll remember the part they played in reigniting hope in all those who walked along the street outside their houses; they rekindled hope by drawing that original symbol that was used to convey God’s message to everyone that although there may be times in our lives when the going gets very tough, when all around there are reports of calamity, upheaval and disaster, the rays of the rainbow will beam out their signal that hope remains, that good will prevail.

As Christians, people of faith, we are sustained by that rainbow message; let us, like the young pavement artists, share that message with all who are willing to hear it.

GENESIS 9:13     I HAVE SET MY RAINBOW IN THE CLOUDS AND IT WILL BE THE COVENANT BETWEEN ME AND THE EARTH.
