Hello!
I am trying to find out if it would be possible to determine whether a family member was married in your church a long time ago. My Aunt is 80 years old and her birthday is approaching. Her parents were wed in Greenock in a church that was not Roman Catholic, probably sometime in the mid 1920's. She is the oldest child so it would make sense that they were married shortly before she was born, or not very far off from that year- 1929. My Aunt really wants to find out where her parents were married, so I am trying to find this out for her birthday. Her father's last name was Deary and her mother's was Hutton. Is there any way you could help me to find out if this is the location they were married at?
Thanks for your help.
Jennifer

In Reply:- Unfortunately, all our old church records are held in Church of Scotland archives in Edinburgh.

Also, our present church is a union of at least 5 churches coming together over the years.

I think that your best chance is to contact the Greenock office of the Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages

All marriages in Greenock are registered there.

Congratulations Bill on your election as Moderator of The GA of the CofS. I was a fellow student in your year at U of G. I have been serving as a Pastor in the Lutheran (ELCA) Church for 34 years now. Will be retiring from full time ministry in January, 2010 but still will do supply and interim.
May our Lord bless you and your work this year.

I am from Indiana and my family and I go to Greenock, Scotland every other summer to visit my grandmother Anne Skedd and her family. I have to say that my most treasured memories of Scotland would be of the church and I wish that there was a church like Westburn here. I think that the Easter Service on top of the hill is a great idea and I wish there were hills here in Indiana where churches could do the same. I grew up in Westburn and I miss going there with my grandmother and aunt every Sunday and hopefully I will be there again soon.

Dear Friends,
It is lovely to visit your web site and feel that I can stay in touch with all that you're doing. I am once again safely back from Iraq and back to work as a country parson in the mountains of Virginia, but longing for the sights, sounds and people of Scotland. Hoping to visit soon and that this finds all of you well and blessed.
In God's peace,
Beth
